Earthquake Kills 31 in Azerbaijan

The earthquake that rocked the central Asian country Azerbaijan in the early hours of November 26 killed 31 people and resulted in heavy property damage, Azeri President Geidar Aliyev announced Thursday in the capital city of Baku.

Three people were killed outright and another 28 died of shock and heart attack in the wake of the disaster.

Fifty-one people in serious condition are hospitalized, and 488 have requested treatment for injuries, said a Health Ministry bulletin issued on Thursday.

According to the Azeri state commission for emergency situations, 73 buildings, including schools and hospitals, have been seriously damaged and 748 families need resettlement.

Aliyev said the government initially allocated 5.5 million dollars for clean-up, but now more funds are needed and the country may turn for international aid.
