HK Sees 15.8 Percent Increase of Visitor Arrivals

Visitor arrivals in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) from January to October 2000 totaled 10,714,562, an increase of 15.8 percent over the same period of last year, according to the Hong Kong Tourist Association (HKTA) Friday, December 1.

"With this continued strong growth, we are now confident that we shall be able to surpass our mid-year forecast of 12.5 million visitors for the full year," said Grace Lee, acting executive director of HKTA.

"We are expecting the final figure to come close to the 1996 record of 12.97 million," she added.

For the month of October, arrivals were 1,194,407, a growth of 13 percent, over the same period of 1999. More than two-thirds of the increased number were from Taiwan and Chinese mainland.

Hotel occupancy for the year to date stands at 83 percent, compared with 79 percent for the first 10 months of 1999.
