Hong Kong to Build Hi-Tech Jail

A "super jail" is now under planning in Hong Kong, which will cover an area of 120 hectares of land and be able to detain as many as 15, 000 convicts. Complete facilities will be installed and hi-tech management adopted in the jail. If endorsed by the Legislative Council of HKSAR the jail would break ground and be completed by the year 2004.

Hong Kong currently has 24 jails, most of which are old and over occupied. To change the situation the Hong Kong government has decided to build a large jail consisting of cells, hospital facilities, a reception room, laundries, dormitories and dining rooms, all under a hi-tech system.

"Super jail" will still have to submit a plan to the Legislative Council for examination on December 7 and, if passed, a thinly populated construction site in Hong Kong will be chosen.
