Shanghai to Invest More in Urban ConstructionShanghai, China's largest industrial and commercial city, will invest 87.2 billion yuan (US$10 billion) in the construction of expressways, crossroads in downtown areas, natural gas transportation pipes and information networks in the coming five years.A rapid communication networks between Shanghai and the neighboring provinces and cities will be formed and the urban management level of the city will become the most advanced in China, according to sources from the Municipal Engineering Administration Bureau of Shanghai Wednesday, November 29. The investment in building expressways in Shanghai will reach 40 billion yuan from 2001 to 2005. Expressways, with a total length of 650 kilometers, will form a network with the expressways of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces in east China. More bridges, underground tunnels and elevated highways will be built in the city as a part of a communication network in the city. The natural gas usage volume of Shanghai will increase to 9.6 million cubic meters in 2003. All the power plants, automobiles and boilers in the city will burn natural gas at that time. In addition, a geographic information system will be established in Shanghai to offer scientific information on urban management. The elevated highways and expressways will be under the monitoring system to avoid traffic accidents and natural disasters. |
