Sri Lanka's Deputy Ministers of Defense, Finance Take Oaths

Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte and Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development G.L. Peiris took oaths on Thursday, November 30, before Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake at his office as deputy ministers of defense and finance respectively.

The reappointment of Ratwatte as the Deputy Minister of Defense has brought to an end to the speculation that he would not secure the position due to the alleged involvement in malpractice during the October 10 parliamentary elections.

Peiris held the same deputy portfolio in previous government.

Wickremanayake took over the post of Minister of Defense and Finance, a key portfolio held by President Kumaratunga as she is currently on a European tour.

Sources said that the two deputy ministers were sworn in after President Kumaratunga gave special instructions to Prime Minister Wickremanayake from London.

Kumaratunga appointed 35 deputy ministers on November 3 but she delayed the appointments of deputy ministers of defense and finance.

A new cabinet of record 44 ministers was appointed by President Kumaratunga on October 19 after parliamentary elections.
