Chinese Defense Minister Meets US Defense Department Under SecretaryDefense Minister Chi Haotian said November 30 that Sino-US defense consultations mechanism promotes mutual understanding and trust between China and the United States, and plays a positive role in furthering relations between the two countries and their armed forces.Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, made the remarks when meeting with Walter B. Slocombe, under secretary of the US Department of Defense, who is in Beijing attending the fourth defense consultations between defense departments of China and the United States. Chi expressed satisfaction with the just-concluded fourth defense consultations as well as the past three. He said that both China and the United States are influential countries of the world, and bear responsibility for world peace and development. Healthy Sino-U.S. relations conforms to the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries, and benefits regional and world peace, stability and development. Chi added that as long as the United States observes the three Sino-US joint communiques and other commitments, and properly settles the Taiwan issue, the prospects for Sino-US relations are promising. Slocombe said that the annual defense consultations between defense departments of China and the United State are an effective mechanism to promote mutual trust, and an important component of state and military relations of the two countries. He noted that the United States and China face the task of developing stable and healthy bilateral relations, and engagement policy towards China has been supported by the two major parties of the United States. Moreover, the current friendly cooperation between the United States and China has laid a solid foundation for the further development of their relations in the new century.
