China Makes Remarkable Economic Achievements in 2000China's national economy has maintained rapid growth this year as a result of effective measures adopted by the Government, according to the Central Economic Working Conference, which closed in Beijing November 30 after a two-day session. The measures include stimulating domestic demand, adopting the pro-active fiscal policy, restructuring the economy, implementing the strategy of developing western regions and boosting export, said the annual conference held by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the State Council. As a result of these measures, investment, consumption and exports nationwide picked up. Thus, the goal of improving the profitability of state-owned large and medium-sized enterprises was basically reached with a surge in profits for enterprises and fiscal income for the state. The changes indicate that China has overcome the difficulties arising from the Asian Financial Crisis and reversed the poor economic growth over the past two years, noted the conference, adding that an important turn for national economic development has emerged. Progress has also been made in other sectors, such as science and technology, education, environmental protection and public health, with the efforts to crack down on corruption further enhanced. The conference attributed the success of the past year mainly to the timely adjusting of macro-economic policies in line with changes and constantly improving policies in practice. Senior Party and Government officials attended conference, including Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing. President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji delivered important speeches on China's economic development programs for next year.
