Sri Lankan Government Confirms Killing of 22 Tamil Tiger Rebels

The Sri Lankan government has confirmed that 22 rebels of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were killed by troops in the country's war-torn areas in the past few days, the Special Media Center said Wednesday, November 29.

It said troops killed 17 Tamil Tiger rebels in an operation in Ariyali, northern Jaffna peninsula, on Monday when they attacked three Tiger rebel bunkers.

In Welioya, north central part of the country, three rebels were killed and several others injured when troops engaged a group of Tiger rebels at Andankulam on the Pulmuddia-Vavuniya road, some 10 kilometers west of Pulmuddia.

One Tiger rebel was found dead in the Padaviya tank area after a rebel attack on a guard point on Tuesday.

In a naval base in Trincomalee, in the east of the country, a rebel intruder on a reconnaissance mission was seriously injured and died later at a hospital on Tuesday after he was shot by an alert naval sentry when he was attempting to escape.

The center also stated that the forces recovered a lot of arms and ammunition left behind by the fleeing Tiger rebels after the operations.

The LTTE rebels have been fighting government forces for a separate Tamil homeland in the north and east of the country since 1983. The rebel leader, Verupillai Prabhakaran, on Monday offered unconditional talks with the government to bring an end to the 17-year ethnic war. But he wanted de-escalation in the warring areas to create a conducive atmosphere for the possible peace talks, a requirement he said should not be interpreted as a precondition for talks.
