Chinese Catholics Urged to Keep Tradition of Anti-imperialism, PatriotismChinese Catholics should keep the tradition of anti-imperialism and patriotism, which the Chinese Catholic church has upheld since it won independence from the Vatican 50 years ago, said a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Wednesday, November 29.Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the anti-imperialism and patriotism movement of the Chinese Catholic Church. Wang, who is also head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, said that in the past 50 years, especially since the reform and opening up, the Chinese Catholic Church has contributed to maintaining social stability and economic prosperity. Wang pointed out that history has proven that independent administration of the church is the correct choice by the Chinese Catholics. Wang hailed the patriotic action of the Chinese Catholics in fighting and exposing the Vatican's "canonization", noting that their resolute action against "canonization" demonstrates their patriotism and determination to safeguard the national interests and maintain the purity of the church. State Councilor Ismail Amat and representatives from other religious groups attended Wednesday's celebration, which was presided over by Bishop Liu Yuanren, president of the Chinese Catholic Bishops College. Michael Fu Tieshan, chairman of the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, delivered a speech reviewing the development of the Chinese Catholic Church, calling upon all disciples to adhere to anti-imperialism and patriotism. |
