Chinese Prawns Popular Worldwide

Exports of Chinese prawns have continued to rise this year with exports from Shanghai port alone reaching 287 tons in the first 10 months this year, up 9.5 times on the same period last year.

Economic Daily reported November 29 that the export volume of prawns from Shanghai port reached US$5 million in the past 10 months, a rise of 11.5 times on last year, of which US$3 millions was earned in October.

The global demand for prawns tops 1.2 million tons annually with the trade volume totaling US$7 billion. The major demand comes from Japan, the US, European Union and Southeast Asia.

Chinese prawns are well known for their high quality. However, their output have been dropping these years.

Experts pointed out that the country shall introduce more high-quality breeds of prawn and advanced breeding technologies from abroad to expand the European and US markets.

Last year 76 percent of China's prawn exports went to Japan, while less than 15 percent entered the European and US market.

Experts also suggested that the government keep an eye on irrational competition within the industry and improve the administration of the export.
