Two Goods Trains Derailed in Separate Incidents in UK
Two British goods trains derailed in separate accidents on Wednesday morning, police said.
The first occurred at 1.30 a.m. (0130 GMT) just south of Northampton in the British Midlands, when the two rear cariages of a freight liner travelling from Tilbury, Essex, left the tracks. The wagons remained upright, but the tracks were damaged.
The second derailment was near the western city of Bristol when an empty coal train on its way from Didcot Power Station to reload derailed on a set of points at Filton junction. The front locomotive fell onto its side. There were no injuries, although the driver was reported to be "shocked."
A British Transport Police spokesman told the press there was no indication of the cause of either accident.
The derailments follow a spate of recent rail accidents, including a derailment at Hatfield north of London in which four people were killed, which prompted a huge review of Britain"s rail network safety and general disruption of passenger services. A mainline train was also derailed on the outskirts of Glasgow on Sunday.
