China Has 1,500 Agricultural Information Websites

A total of 1,500 agricultural information websites, including 177 specifically focusing on farm technology, have been set up in China, according to a national meeting.

The Work Conference on Networking and Digitalization of Information on Farm Technology held November 28 was attended by over 300 Chinese officials and experts.

So far, most of the local agriculture academies and universities have Internet access, sources said.

China has also made progress in building up data banks on farm technology, according to Mei Fangquan, director of the Information Center on Science and Technology under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science (CAAS).

The center has set up 11 data banks, in Chinese and other foreign languages, and is producing discs on the data, with a total of nine million pieces of data. Visitors using the data banks, through the website, can easily retrieve 85 percent of the world's data on agricultural science and technology.

During the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005), China plans to improve and expand the national information network on agricultural science and technology.

Meanwhile, the CAAS, with over 30 provincial agricultural academies and over 40 agricultural universities, will set up a joint-stock information network on farm technology and education.
