Fujimori Government's Ambassadors Dismissed
Peruvian interim President Valentin Paniagua on November 28 fired retired military and government officials who acted as ambassadors under former president Alberto Fujimori.
Those fired are: Maria Luisa Federici, ambassador to France; Ana Maria Deustua Caravedo, ambassador to Italy; Beatriz Ramacciotti, permanent representative to the Organization of American States; Alfredo Ross, ambassador to Panama; Luis Silva, ambassador to Germany; Victor Aritomi, ambassador to Japan; Victor Yamamoto, ambassador to Hondurus; Juan Castilla, ambassador to Cuba; and Tomas Castillo, ambassador to Morocco.
The dismissals are believed to be the first step adopted by new premier Javier Perez del Cuellar to carry out new diplomatic policies after Paniagua assumed interim presidency last week.
The new government, formed after Fujimori was removed by Congress for "moral incapacity," was tasked with the conduction of fresh elections in April 2001. The mandate for the interim government will expire on July 28, 2001.
