ALSTOM Seeking Business Opportunities in Southwest China

France's ALSTOM which has operated in China for more than 20 years is turning to China's western region for business opportunities as the Chinese government is carrying out a cross-century program to develop the resources-rich region.

China's strategy to develop the western areas has created more business opportunities for ALSTOM, and the company hopes to find some cooperation projects in the field of power generation in Guizhou Province, southwest China, an ALSTOM executive said Tuesday evening.

Geoffrey Ball, president of ALSTOM's China arm, made the remarks when meeting with Liu Changgui, vice-governor of Guizhou Province.

Southwest China is rich in hydropower resources and some hydropower stations are under construction in Guizhou as part of a government program to transmit electricity from the west to the east.

ALSTOM is concerned about the hydropower projects in this area, Geoffrey noted.

Extending welcome to all world-renowned companies like ALSTOM, the vice-governor said Guizhou will invest 45 million yuan (about US$5.4 billion) to expand the installed capacity of its power stations by eight million kilowatts in the next five years.

"We need to increase cooperation with big-name companies around the world by then," he said.
