Investigation of the Collapse of Viaduct Bridge Starts

Investigation to the collapse of a viaduct bridge at Yantian-Bagang Expressway in Shenzhen on the evening of November 27 was given emphasis to by the municipal government.

Local sources said that Shenzhen government would take the responsibility to organize an investigation team to study the reason of the accident. And the investigation began Tuesday.

The accident took place in the construction of Yantian-Bagang expressway, one of the key construction projects of Shenzhen, has arisen attention from the municipal government.

Shenzhen attaches great importance to the quality of the construction projects, said a local official.

The collapse was suspected to impute to the damage of cast irons in the south of the bridge.

However, whether the break down was resulted from the inappropriate operation in construction or mishap in design was still yet to come out.

The bridge was designed by the Designing Institute of Shenzhen under the Ministry of Railway and was constructed by a company of China Railway Construction Group.

The collapse caused injure to 19 workers and serious injure to five at the spot. Nobody was at the danger of death.

The bridge, which is still under construction near Yantian port, Yantian district suddenly fell in at nine forty-five on Monday evening.

Witness said that a 30-metre-wide and 50-metre-long part of the bridge broke to a V-shape and gave way to the ground.

The 60 workers on the bridge fell to the ground and some of them were weighed down under the fallen irons.

Injurers were given immediate rescue and medical treatment in local hospitals.

Tan Guoxiang, an official from Shenzhen government said that rescue to workers were timely and efficient.

More than ten ambulances were assembled and concerning departments such as public security, forced police and transportation arrived on the scene to help with the rescue.

The bridge was located at the jumping-off of the Yantian-Bagang expressway, which aims to improve the transportation condition of eastern Shenzhen, after the completion of its first phase within this year.

The 28.9-kilometre-long expressway starts with Yantian port and ends at the border with Huizhou city.

It is expected that the nearly 2-billion-yuan (US$240 million) project would propel the economic and tourist development of Shenzhen's eastern areas by a great margin.
