Int'l Typhoon Conference Opens in Macao

More than 60 specialists and representatives of international organizations began an eight-day conference November 28 to discuss ways of preventing and reducing typhoon damage.

The meeting offers a good opportunity for the members of the Typhoon Committee to promote and coordinate joint efforts to minimize typhoon damage in the Asia-Pacific region, said Ao Man Long, secretary for transport and public works of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government.

At the opening ceremony of the session, the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau was presented Natural Disaster Prevention Award 2000 by the Typhoon Committee Trust Fund.

The conference is the 33rd session of the Typhoon Committee, which was founded in 1968 by the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the World Meteorological Organization.
