Top Officials of Romania's Leading Ruling Party ResignTop members of the Christian Democratic National Peasants' Party of Romania (CDNPP), the country's leading ruling party, announced their collective resignation Sunday.According to reports from Rompres, the Chairman of the CDNPP and Romania's Chamber of Deputies Ion Diaconescu, First Deputy Chairman of CDNPP and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Ioan Muresan, together with six other deputy chairmen of CDNPP quit their party positions. Analysts noted that the CDNPP leaders resigned to shoulder new responsibilities since the party's defeat in Sunday's parliamentary elections. Romanian Democratic Convention Alliance 2000, a coalition of right-wing parties led by CDNPP, lost in the parliamentary election Sunday and was kicked out of the parliament. Preliminary official counting on Sunday night showed that CDNPP received only 5.3 percent of votes in the Senate and 5 percent in the Chamber of Deputies, much lower than the 10 percent required to enter parliament. Diaconescu said the interim leadership of CDNPP will convene this Saturday to appoint a special committee to deal with party affairs and to make preparations for the party's special convention, which is set for next January. Analysts expect CDNPP to summarize the failure of its four years in power, elect a new leading group, and make big changes within itself in the special convention next January, so as to re-enter the parliament in the next election in four years. |
