Peruvian Premier Vows to Have Free ElectionsPeruvian Prime Minister Javier Perez de Cuellar said November 27 that his cabinet's top priority is to ensure a transparent electoral process. The executive power has to prepare the way for the April 2001 elections in order to start a real democratic government, said Perez de Cuellar at an official ceremony. He said the first task of the government is to develop confidence in and outside the country because the last three elections, the most recent one in particular, have generated doubts. Another goal is to guarantee economic stability, he said. Perez de Cuellar was named prime minister last week after former president Alberto Fujimori was sacked by parliament for "moral incapacity." Fujimori, who won a third term in May elections, lost power after an election scandal was revealed in September. |
