Kim Dae-Jung Backs Indonesia's Territorial Integrity
Visiting South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung said November 28 that his government fully supports the territorial integrity of the unitary state of Indonesia, adding that he also thanks President Abdurrahman Wahid for his support to the efforts made by South Korea in maintaining peace in the Korean peninsula.
Kim also said that he respected steps taken by Jakarta in dealing with separatist movement in some provinces in Indonesia, saying that Indonesia's integrity was very important for the regional stability.
"Our government fully support the integrity of Indonesia's territory (from any disintegration threats)," Kim told a joint press conference after three hours meeting with Wahid at Merdeka Palace.
Kim arrived in Jakarta Monday along with 150 members of a delegation from South Korea for a three-day official visit. During the visit, Kim met with Wahid and is scheduled to meet with Korean community and entrepreneurs here.
Meanwhile, Wahid hoped that the Korean government would play an active role in helping Indonesia to overcome the ongoing economic crisis.
Indonesian, South Korea Agree to Improve Ties
Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid and his South Korean counterpart Kim Dae-Jung agreed on November 28 in Jakarta to improve bilateral relations between the two countries.
The two leaders made the statement during a joint press conference in the wake of a three hours meeting between Wahid and Kim at the Merdeka Palace.
The South Korean leader said that he has reached some agreements with Wahid on trade issues, such as automotive, telecommunication, construction, oil and energy.
"President Wahid and I have agreed to safeguard the good relationship between the two countries. President Wahid has also asked me to encourage Korean investments in Indonesia," Kim told the conference.
"I also asked the Indonesian government to pay its attention in creating a stable climate for business activities, so that South Korean business people can make business here," he added.
