Shanghai to Cut China's Biggest Underwater Traffic Tunnel

Shanghai to Cut China's Biggest Underwater Traffic Tunnel
As is learned by news from "Shanghai Outer-Loop-Line Tunnel Exhibition Hall", Shanghai has lately started cutting an underwater traffic tunnel beyond its Outer-Loop-Line, known as "Outer-Loop-Line Tunnel", which is to be cut and put into operation in the coming three years.

Taking Pudong's Sancha Port as starting point, the tunnel will have its terminal by Wusong Park, Puxi District, extending over a distance of 2880 meters, of which 736 meters will be cut underwater by sink-tube method. So far, two huge ferroconcrete docks involving 1.1 million cubic meters of earthwork have been built on opposite banks of the Huangpu River.

Shanghai Tunnel Traffic Research Institute has been entrusted with designing of the tunnel. "There are some bold ideas in designing of the project", said Chief Engineer Qial Zongshao of the tunnel. When completed, the "Outer-Loop-Line Tunnel" will be formed of seven linked pipes across the river, of which four will be in a beautiful 1200-meter-long curve to bypass a 20-meter deep underwater pool. Along with special techniques to be used for reinforced joints to prevent any possible water leakage the tunnel will also have an emergency exit to be cut every 50 meters to ensure commuters' safety.
