Hainan Sets New Goal on Per Capita GDP

China's Hainan Province has set a new target to increase its per capita gross domestic product (GDP) to over 10,000 yuan (US$1,204) in five years.

Wang Xiaofeng, governor of Hainan Province and deputy secretary of the Hainan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), announced the target at the Sixth Plenary Session of the Third Provincial CPC Committee.

According to Wang, the province is confident of realizing the goal during the country's Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005).

The province should speed up local economic development, increase residents' income and improve the ecological environment, he said.

Statistics show that the per capita GDP in Hainan, China's largest special economic zone, was 930 yuan in 1988. The figure this year is expected to reach 7,200 yuan, an increase of 670 percent over the figure 12 years ago.
