Inner Mongolia Alert at Ice Flow in Yellow River

The government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has urged related departments to prepare for possible ice flows along the Yellow River, China's second longest.

Ice flows started to appear on the Yellow River on November 10, earlier than usual because the temperature in some areas along the river was lower than normal.

So far, a 76-kilometer section of the river in Inner Mongolia has frozen.

When the Yellow River is frozen, which usually lasts until next spring, water will start to accumulate upstream as ice flows block its course downwards, leading to higher water levels in parts of the river and thereby the controlling of ice flows becomes more difficult.

The Inner Mongolia Flood Control and Drought Prevention Office fears that the efforts to prevent damages caused by the ice flow is more difficult than previous years because ice flow is larger this year.
