Economic Growth to Exceed Eight Percent: OfficialChina's economic growth will almost certainly exceed eight percent this year, according to Qiu Xiaohua, spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics. The year 2000 has witnessed the best economic conditions in China since the start of the Asian financial crisis, Qiu was quoted by China Securities as saying at a seminar in Shenzhen recently. According to the spokesman, the growth rate for 2000 will surely be higher than that of the last year and also the goal set at the beginning of the year. However, he said it is still too early to say that the economy has entered a new stage of growth, as the foundation for a change in the macro-economy is not solid enough. The improvement of the economy is mainly a result of government policy, while the improvement in enterprises' performance is actually limited, Qiu said. Qiu noted that effective economic restructuring is critical for a sustainable growth of the economy.
