Clinton to Visit Northern Ireland
US President Bill Clinton is to visit Northern Ireland in December before his term of office ends.
It is understood the US president will also visit London and the Republic of Ireland during the trip, which will take place from 12-14 December.
The spokesman said the president would hold meetings with politicians and also speak directly to the people, north and south.
Meanwhile, the Irish premier, Bertie Ahern, has said he is delighted at the news of President Clinton's visit.
The Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams has also welcomed the visit.
Mr Clinton had been invited to return to Northern Ireland during a meeting with the first and deputy first ministers David Trimble and Seamus Mallon at the White House in September.
Mr Trimble said he had invited Mr Clinton to return to Northern Ireland before his term as president ended in January.
Mr Clinton has already made two presidential visits to Northern Ireland, once during his first term and again shortly after the Omagh bombing in 1998.
