Magazine Launches Voting for Top Ten World Leaders

Brilliant Chinese, a China-based magazine with circulation among Chinese communities worldwide, announced 21 candidates November 27 for its Top Ten Most Influential World Leaders selection for the year 2000.

Meanwhile, a specific website, www.f-rate.com, has been set up for the event, whose theme is "Responsibility and Role of the World's Leaders in the 21st Century, " said Wang Kun, Editor-in-chief of Brilliant Chinese.

The 21 candidates, including Chinese President Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the United Nations Kofi Annan and President of the United States Bill Clinton, were selected from almost 300 state heads and government leaders after the first round of balloting, Wang said.

These candidates were selected for having accomplished superb achievements in office, for guiding their countries onto a new path of development, or for being active participants and mediators in international affairs and regional conflicts, he said.

Three prizes are arranged for this year's selection, namely, " Prize for Achievement in World Peace and Development," "the Brilliant Chinese Magazine Prize for Contribution to Peace" and " the Brilliant Chinese Magazine Prize for Contribution to Development."

The Brilliant Chinese Magazine has issued 10 million ballots worldwide and the balloting will be conducted either via Internet e-mail or mailed written votes. The final results are expected to be announced by March next year, Wang said.
