Beijing CATV Users Expected to TV Network Era

A project of transforming CATV into wide-band network based on HFC technology is now under way in Beijing. As reported, about two million CATV users will be able to watch movies and "surf" on the Internet within three years.

The HFC technology was brought up recently by Beijing CATV Bureau at the Exhibition of Construction and Management of Information Technology in International Cities in China.

According to Liao Yanming, engineer of Beijing CATV Network Center, Beijing has already seen over 3000 km of optical cable laid underground with more than two million CATV users. This has offered us a sound foundation for wide-band network in Beijing. The TV optical cable is a wideband network in itself. With a band wide as 2-10G bytes it is actually hundred times that of an ordinary telephone line.

As known to correspondents, the transformation work has already been brought to an end in some areas like Xiluyuan and Zhongguancun Science Park, facilitating tens of thousands of families to access the wideband network at home. Moreover, they can not only enjoy movies just by clicking the mouse, but can also pay the bills of water, electricity and natural gas, and receiving medical services as well as education through telnet.
