Hong Kong's External Trade Shows Sharp Increase in October

Hong Kong's total exports of goods and imports of goods showed further sharp year-on-year increases in October, according to the external merchandise trade figures released here Monday by the Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong.

The value of total exports of goods, comprising re-exports and domestic exports, increased strongly, by 23.6 percent in October over a year earlier to 155 billion HK dollars (US$19.8 billion).

Within this total, the value of re-exports surged by 24.8 percent to 139 billion HK dollars (US$17.8 billion), while that of domestic exports rose by 14 percent to 16 billion HK dollars (US$2.05 billion).

The value of imports of goods also soared, by 25.3 percent in October over a year earlier to 158.8 billion HK dollars (US$20.3 billion).

A government secretariat spokesman noted that the robust merchandise export performance was extended well into October, bolstered mainly by the sustained strong import absorption in all the major markets.

Concurrently, imports retained for local use also registered a further marked increase, upon the continued rise in domestic demand, the spokesman added.
