Sharks Unbeaten in Chinese Basketball League

Shanghai Sharks remained as the only unbeaten team in the Chinese Basketball League with a narrow 94-88 victory over Jiangsu Dragons November 26 in Nanjing.

Guard Shan Weiguo scored four of his 25 points in the final minute to extend Shanghai's season-opening winning streak to three.

Shan, 28-year-old, shot two free throws 40 seconds from the end of the fourth quarter to give the Sharks a 92-88 lead before he was fouled 36 seconds later. He again made both to seal the second road win for the Sharks.

Yao Ming, the 2.23-meter promising center who played a key role in Shanghai's first two victories, contributed 20 points, 13 rebounds and two assists and Hu Weidong, last season's leading scorer, led Jiangsu with 30 points.

In Shenyang, Liaoning province, visiting Defending champion Bayi Rockets overcame Liaoning Hunters 117-97 for their second straight win after first-round defeat to the Sharks. Wang Zhizhi, who was selected by the NBA Dallas Mavericks in 1998-99 in the second round draft, had 24 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks for the Rockets.

Beijing Ducks, the only other undefeated team beside Shanghai before Sunday, saw their two-game winning streak snapped at home as Sun Jun, current leading scorer of the league, shot down 37 points to inspire Jilin Northeast Tigers rally past the Ducks 98-91.

Shenyang Army, promoted from the Chinese second division this season, crashed to Jinan Army 88-74 to be the sole squad without a victory after three rounds of competition.

In Sunday's other games, Shandong Flaming Bulls trounced Zhejiang Cyclone 112-83 at home and Guangdong Hongyuan nipped visiting Vanguard Aoshen 95-92.
