Israel Raids South Lebanon after Bomb AttackIsraeli warplanes raided south Lebanon Sunday morning after several Israeli soldiers were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in an Israeli-occupied disputed border area. The Israeli gunships fired missiles at suspected targets of the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the Shebaa Farms along the border between Israel, Lebanon and Syria. Meanwhile, Israeli troops exchanged fire with Hezbollah, or Party of God, guerrillas along the border. No casualties were reported in the battles so far. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the powerful bomb attack early in the day, Israeli security forces believed it was carried out by the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hezbollah, which had spearheaded a guerrilla war against Israel's 22-year occupation in south Lebanon. Syria and Lebanon claim that the Shebaa Farms, at the foot of the Golan Heights, belong to Lebanon. Israel said it captured the farms from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and the fate of the farms should be decided in its negotiations with Syria. The United Nations considers the farms Syrian territories and that they should not be related to Israel's pullout from south Lebanon in May. |
