Yugoslavia Returns to Central European InitiativeThe Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was readmitted to the Central European Initiative (CEI) at a summit in Budapest on Saturday after an eight-year suspension.Yugoslavia, a CEI founding member, was suspended from the organization in 1991 during the Bosnian war. At the Budapest summit, the heads of government of the 16 member states or their representatives "warmly welcomed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a new member," their final declaration said. During the two-day meeting, participants agreed to strengthen cooperation in environmental protection, scientific research, telecommunications, education, transport and tourism, and the promotion of small- and medium-sized enterprises. The CEI, which was established in 1989, is aimed at enhancing cooperation in Central Europe and helping with European integration. |
