China Pledges More Money to HRD Cooperation With ASEAN

China has decided to inject an extra US$5 million into a human resources development (HRD) fund which was set up in cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji made the announcement November 25 in Singapoer at the summit between China and the 10 ASEAN member countries.

The money added to the amount which China had already contributed to finance over 10 projects including personnel training and exchange programs.

It will be used for increased exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN in the economic, trade, scientific, technological, information and other fields, Zhu said.

"Priority will be given to HRD cooperation, including more training of financial personnel from ASEAN," he said.

Besides, Zhu said, China will sponsor training courses on applicable techniques within the ASEAN + 3 (China, Japan and South Korea) framework so as to facilitate HRD cooperation among all the parties involved.

"China will continue its cooperation with ASEAN in the fields of remote sensing and genetic modification," the premier said.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, Cambodia, Thailand Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia.
