Fox Vows to Fight Poverty

Mexico's President-elect, Vicente Fox, assured on Friday that he will seek to eradicate poverty.

When he made public the second block of his Cabinet, Fox said that among his goals are to fight rural backwardness, and to professionalize peasants.

"We cannot continue having a macro-economic growth if there is not a clear benefit for every household; we cannot promote law initiatives that do not take into account the conservation of our natural resources; we cannot take measures that damage those having less," he said.

Among the commitments of the new administration are to directly help citizens, Indians, migrants, poor people and handicapped people.

Fox stressed that to eradicate poverty and ignorance it is necessary to generate jobs, to increase credit availability and to develop quality basic services.

Mexico's President-elect made public the list of names of his Cabinet, with outstanding cases like the appointment of a former entrepreneurial leader -former President of the Mexican Employers' Confederation (Coparmex)- Carlos Maria Abascal Carranza, as Labor Minister.
