CAS, Bell Co-build Communications Research Lab

Bell Labs Research China and Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced the establishment of a joint communications research lab in Beijing November 23.

``It is a win-win deal for us to set up the joint lab,'' said Yan Yixun, Chairman of China Network Communications and former vice-president of the CAS.

As China's top research organization in basic researches and high technology development, Yan said, CAS has been looking forward to working with international science and technology communities.

``The agreement with the Bell Labs will enhance the level of scientific research, staff training and information exchange of the CAS,'' he said.

According to the agreement, the joint lab will conduct research in communications technology, initially Internet IPv6 protocol, with the guidance of Multimedia Communications and Network Engineering Research Centre under the Institute of Software and Bell Labs Research China.

Also, Bell Labs Research China will provide training and aid intellectual exchange programs for the researchers at the joint lab.

On Thursday, on behalf on CAS, Yan also awarded David Lee, vice president of Bell Labs Research China the honoured researcher of the Institute of Software of the CAS.

``It's a further step for us to collaborate with academic community in China,'' said Carl Hsu, president of Bell Labs, Asia Pacific and China.

Established in March, 2000, Bell Labs Research China is the first of its kind built outside the United States.

``To work closely with universities and other research institutes is a tradition of Bell Labs, which will be beneficial to both side,'' said Hsu.

It has so far established three joint research labs with Tsinghua University, one joint lab Peking University, and reach an agreement with the National Natural Science Foundation of China in aiding key research programmes and Youth Foundation programmes.

According to Lee, it plans to seek another co-operation with Shanghai Fudan University next month.

Lucent Technologies's Bell Labs is one of the world's most innovative research and development organizations in communications. In the past 75 years, Bell Labs has garnered more than 40,000 patents.
