Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Enthusiastic in South China

The 2000 Zhanjiang Marine Economy Fair opened Friday with many Hong Kong entrepreneurs being present for trade negotiations with the local companies.

Starting from Friday in south China's Guangdong Province, the fair is expected to arouse great enthusiasm from the Hong Kong companies.

Jacky Chung, representative of the Shenzhen office of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said the improvement of Zhanjinag's environment, public transportation and living conditions over the past few years have caught the attention of more and more Hong Kong businessmen.

"The people here are earnest and candid. We feel at home here,"said Warren Wei, who works in the Guangzhou office of the CLP Power China.

Among the over 300 items up for negotiations at the fair, the Zhanjiang Gulf Bridge project is the largest one, involving 1.88 billion yuan (about 226 million U.S. dollars).

So far, over 300 of the more than 500 joint ventures in the city are funded by Hong Kong companies, with a total investment of over 840 million U.S. dollars.
