China Develops High-Yield Millet Breed
Chinese agricultural scientists have developed a new millet breed with a reported per hectare yield of 15,525 kilograms, three to four times more than the ordinary ones.
The new breed, named "Dungu No. 1," was developed by a research group headed by Dong Fuhai, director of the Millet Institute under the Shanxi University of Agriculture, and Lidong, a grass-root technician from Linxian County of north China's Shanxi province.
According to the researchers, besides high-yield, the new breed also has such characteristics as being capable of withstanding droughts, having a good taste and resisting gales, diseases, and leanness.
So far, this new breed has attracted wide attention from a number of provinces and is expected to be introduced to all of north China soon.
