China to Step up Research on Geographic, Resource SciencesChina has decided to step up its research on geographic and resource sciences in a bid to better serve the country's economic and social development and catch up with overseas countries in the fields.Liu Jiyuan, director of the newly-founded Institute of Geographic and Resource Research with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said recently that the institute has formulated a plan to make itself a first-class research institute in the world within ten years. In the meantime, the institute will strive to provide the central and local governments with more and better information on resources, the environment, biological construction and sustainable development. The institute was set up earlier this year based on the Institute of Geography and Committee for Comprehensive Survey of Natural Resources. However, only 143 young, outstanding scientists have been selected by the institute from nearly 700 scientists and supporting staff in order to form an elite research organization, said the director. The institute also selected 35 young, outstanding scientists from applicants from research organizations in China and overseas.
