Better Taxi Service Called for Bidding Olympic Games

All the taxi companies and drivers in the capital city of China are required to offer high-quality service, as one of the city's efforts to bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The goal is to make Beijing taxis safe, comfortable and dependable as well as help visitors feel at home, in line with emphasizing the advancement of science, the use of new technologies and environmental protection, the theme proposed for the Olympic Games, according to Zhang Yansheng, director of the Beijing Transportation Bureau.

Beijing will educate taxi drivers in spoken English, improve the monitoring processes, equip each taxi with at least one kind of newspaper as well as introductory tapes that describe the ancient city.

Other measures to fulfill the new call include building an efficient taxi dispatching and positioning system and replacing conventional petrol with cleaner liquid natural gas, according to Zhang.
