Three Chinese Women Soccer Players Join WUSA

Three Chinese women soccer players completed their move from respective Chinese clubs to the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) on November 24.

Wen Lirong and Liu Ailing of Beijing and Henan's Fan Yunjie have signed formal contract with WUSA vice president of player personnel Lauren Gregg.

Wen, Liu and Fan are to be selected by the eight WUSA teams, who will kick off the new league in the spring of 2001.

Gregg will fly to Shanghai on Saturday to sign the contract with Chinese national captain Sun Wen, who led China to runners-up at the 1996 Olympics and 1999 World Cup when they lost thrilling final to the United States.

"Sun's trasfer is just a matter of time," Gregg told Xinhua.

A total of six Chinese players were targeted by WUSA, which is being set up in the United States, but Gao Hong and Zhao Lihong from Guangdong have got red light from their club.

It is believed that Guangdong, the hosts for the Ninth National Games of China, would like to have Gao and Zhao stayed because of their high expectation from the Games.

"I am in a hurry journey, so I will have no time to make further discussion with the Guangdong club," said Gregg. "Moreover, the opening WUSA draft will be held soon. Thus, it is hardly possible for Gao and Zhao to join the league this season."

Earlier, the six players have been given green light for the transfers by the Chinese Football Association (CFA).

"It will be great opportunities for them to play abroad," said CFA spokesman Feng Jianming on Friday. "Chinese Football Association has already expressed fully support to the transfers."
