Chinese Premier Urges Development of Information Industry in East Asia

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji called Friday for greater attention to the development of information industry in East Asia.

At the summit meeting between the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China, Japan and South Korea, Zhu said, "China fully affirms and supports the e-ASEAN Framework Agreement, which represents a major step on the part of ASEAN to meet the needs of the high-tech development."

Spelling out his five-point proposal on enhancing East Asia cooperation at the summit, the Chinese Premier said: "We are ready to participate in the development of e-ASEAN, speed up the building of the new-generation high-speed Internet and promote the development of e-business. The Chinese side will also strengthen its coordination with Japan and the Republic of Korea in this area.

Leaders of ASEAN countries signed the e-ASEAN framework agreement Friday. The e-ASEAN initiative calls for the facilitation of the establishment of the ASEAN information infrastructure, the growth of e-commerce, capacity building and e-society, and e-governance.

ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
