Nenjiang River Water Project to StartChina is planning to build a large water project on Nenjiang River, a main river in the northeast part of the country, to prevent future floods.The Ni'erji reservoir, scheduled to be built on the upper reaches of the Nenjiang River, will start construction next year, according to the Office of Irrigation Works in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The whole water project on Ni'erji, with a total investment of 5.38 billion yuan (US$650 million), will be finished in five years. When completed, it will be able to hold 8.374 billion cubic meters of water. Devastating floods on the Nenjiang River and nearby Songhua River in 1998 affected millions of people and caused billion yuan of economic losses in the northeastern region, China's major granary and industrial base. The new reservoir will provide a shield for big oil fields and key transportation lines. It will also ease the shortage of water in parts of the region and improve irrigation and shipping. |
