Zimbabwe to Continue to Support Peacekeeping OperationsThe Zimbabwe Defense Forces will continue to play an important role in peace-keeping operations in the region, Defense Minister Moven Mahachi said Thursday, November 23, in Harare."Depending on the availability of resources, the Zimbabwe Defense Ministry will always be ready to consider participation in any peacekeeping operations in our part of the region whenever the need arises," Mahachi said. The minister made the remarks here while addressing participants to the Joint Command and Staff Course at the Zimbabwe Staff College from Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and the United States. Mahachi noted the defense forces have been involved in UN peacekeeping missions in a number of African countries. Of the 40,000 soldiers in Zimbabwe, about 11,000 have been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since August 1998, defending DRC President Laurent Kabila against rebels. |
