Forensics Stressed to Guarantee Fairer Trials

Forensic science in China should be updated to guarantee fairer trials, a senior judge said on November 23.

Liu Jiachen, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court, said that forensic science centers at various levels should pay more attention to modern technology in making experts' opinion for such opinions are usually presented to the courts as evidence.

"Forensic science in China needs to bring itself up to global economic and scientific standards," Liu said.

Forensic science in China is no longer used merely to assess victims' injuries. It also covers a wide range of traces of evidence, such as authenticating documents and handwriting.

"Forensic authentication has already become an indispensable tool for Chinese courts in complicated cases," said Liu, urging courts throughout the country should continue to build up and improve forensic science institutes and work towards a uniform system.

The Ministry of Justice set up its own forensic science center early this week in East China's Shanghai.

Statistics from the Supreme People's Court indicated that between 1986 and last years, the forensic science institutes of the nation's courts handled more than one million cases including 560,000 civil cases.

Center Established

The Center of Forensic Sciences under the Ministry of Justice was established in Shanghai Tuesday, November 21.

Vice-Minister Liu Yang described it as a major step in China's forensic management system to realize judicial justness.
