Chinese Women Soccer Players Get Green Light to Join WUSA
Six Chinese women soccer players have been given green light to join the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), the Chinese Football Association (CFA) spokesman Feng Jianming said November 24 in Jinan.
It is reported that officials from WUSA are in Beijing this week to discuss the details of the transfers and the six players targeted are Chinese national captain Sun Wen who plays for Shanghai, Wen Lirong and Liu Ailing from Beijing and Guangdong's Gao Hong and Zhao Lihong and Fan Yunjie of Henan.
Whether the Chinese women could join the new club league, which is being set up in the United States, will depend on their own opinions and that of the clubs they are playing for, according to Feng.
"It will be great opportunities for them to play abroad," said Feng, who is here to inspect the city's preparation for the 2004 Asian Cup soccer tournament along with CFA vice president Zhang Jilong. "Chinese Football Association has already expressed fully support to the transfers."
Eight WUSA teams, which are based in Atlanta, Boston, New York, Orlando, Philadelphis, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington respectively, will kick off the new league in the Spring.
