Multi-media System Introduced to Tibetan Higher EducationA multi-media educating system was put into use for the first time on Friday at Tibet University in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.The network system consists of 187 PCs equipped with multi-media software, providing a convenient environment for students to practice foreign languages. The new computer system, which involved a joint investment of some 4.8 million yuan (nearly US$58,000) from the central and the autonomous regional government, will help to improve the all-round language ability of local students, according to Liu Qinghui, president of the university. Apart from using the computer programs, students may also receive broadcasting programs transmitted by the school radio station within a range of one kilometer of the university. Modern Education System Established in TibetThanks to the full implementation of the strategy of giving priority to education work, recent years has seen rapid development in education system in the Tibet Autonomous Region.By the end of 1999, 83.4% of the schooling children in Tibet entered school for education. Tibet has thus achieved one year ahead of the schedule the strategic goal, in which "every county has middle schools, every township primary schools, and 80% of schooling children have the chance to receive education in school."
