Four American Airlines Approved to Add Sino-American FlightsFederal Express Corporation, one of the world biggest express transportation enterprises, announced November 24 that it has been approved to add one new flight per week to China.The other three American aviation carriers, United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and UPS, have also been approved by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to add new flights. United Airlines will add two flights per week, and Northwest Airlines will add one flight. As a new cargo carrier on the Sino-American air route, UPS will open six flights per week. The ten new flights will formally open on April 1, 2001. United Airlines currently provides 12 Sino-American flights each week, seven on Beijing-San Francisco and five on Shanghai-San Francisco, while Federal Express offers ten flights per week from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen to the US. David L.Cunningham, president of the Asia Pacific Division of Federal Express, said, "the new flights underline the growing importance of trade between China and the US, and we are ready to use our new frequency to deliver improved services to our customers in China." US Grants UPS Direct Flight to ChinaThe US Department of Transportation (DOT) announced November 21 a tentative decision to grant the United Parcel Service (UPS) the right to operate direct flight to China."The DOT made a bold, forward-looking decision that recognizes the new economy and UPS's role in the global marketplace," said Jim Kelly, Chairman and CEO of UPS. Federal Express Expands Business in ChinaSince it established its first joint venture in China last year, Federal Express, the largest air express delivery service worldwide, has provided a series of services to Chinese clients.In March this year, Federal Express created the Chinese version of "Fedex Internetship," a new delivery software based on Internet, through which Chinese clients can fill in a delivery form in Chinese on Internet.
