Beijing Restructures Police Department

The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau has reduced its sections from 48 to 29, and nearly 1,000 staff members, or one-fourth of the total, will go to the local police branches.

A spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau said that this is an important step in the bureau's institutional reform.

"It will help create an efficient, better and stronger police system in Beijing," the spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the restructured sections involve entry and exit management, hotels management and tourism security.

After the adjustment, the number of police dealing with crime will obviously increase to occupy over 15 percent of the total police force, and those at the local neighborhood branches will also markedly increased.

Recently, Beijing police has appointed 30 section-level officers through open competition, and 110 unqualified police officers have been fired.
