Greater Ideological Emancipation Needed for W. China Development: Official

State Councilor Wu Yi has called for further ideological emancipation in developing China's underdeveloped western region.

Western China should take advantage of the government strategy of developing the west and the benefits of the country's forthcoming entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) to develop itself, she said.

The official made the remarks during her study tour of Shaanxi Province, in the northwest, on November 20-22, where she visited anumber of local hi-tech parks and villagers in Yan'an, the capital of the Communist Party of China-led revolutionary movement in the 1930s-40s.

In her talks with local officials, the state councilor urged local people to make use of local resources and other advantages, to take lead in the west-developing campaign.

Without opening-up, China may lag behind at a time when science and technology are developing rapidly and the world is experiencing economic globalization, Wu noted.

She urged the western region to open up to both developed areas in the country and foreign nations so as to boost the local economy by introducing capital, personnel, products and technology from the outside.
