Chinese Firm to Produce 10 Million SIM CardsThe Datang Microelectric Corporation, a major Chinese firm for telecom products, will produce 10 million SIM cards to be used in GSM handsets in 2001, catering for 20 percent of the total demand in China. The country now relies heavily on imported SIM cards because of the shortage of chip technology, which has stifled the development of the industry. In 1999, Datang launched a research project to develop a chip for the SIM card and achieved great success. In April this year, Datang produced the first batch of 5,000 SIM cards for Tianjin Mobile Telecom. |
