China Urges Related Countries to Abandon Anti-Ballistic Missile Plan

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said that China hopes related countries will abandon the anti-ballistic missile plan as soon as possible.

Sun made the remarks Thursday, November 23, at a regular press conference in response to a relevant question.

He said that the 55th General Assembly session of the United Nations on November 20 adopted a resolution on the preservation of and compliance with the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty.

The draft resolution, jointly sponsored by China, Russia, Belarus and Kyrghyzstan, was approved by 88 votes in favor and 5 against, Sun noted.

Compared with the situation last year, more countries supported the resolution this year, according to Sun.

"This fully demonstrates the will and determination of the international community to maintain the global strategic balance and stability," said Sun.

"It also shows that the international community does not agree with the development and deployment of the national missile defense system by certain countries," he said.

China, as one of the proposers of the draft resolution, is grateful to those countries who voted in favor of the document, Sun noted.

He said that "China hopes certain countries will listen carefully to the just voice of the international society, strictly observe and comply with the treaty, and give up the anti-ballistic missile plan, that destroys the global strategic balance, as soon as possible."
