Mexican President-elect Fox Appoints Economy-Oriented CabinetMexican president-elect Vicente Fox Wednesday announced a batch of eight members in his new cabinet, kicking off the first cabinetmaking by the opposition in 71 years.On the list of new cabinet secretaries, there were five economic and commercial experts and practitioners, including the incumbent CEO of a telecommunications company Francisoco Gil Diaz as treasury secretary, economist Luis Ernesto Derbez as the newly created economy secretary, entrepreneur Pedro Cerisola as secretary of transportation and communications, businesswoman Leticia Navarro as tourism secretary and a noted farmer Javier Usabiaga as secretary of agriculture. In addition, New York University professor Jorge Castaneda, chemical engineer Ernesto Martensn and former director of the environment commission of NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) were appointed as foreign secretary, energy secretary and environment secretary respectively. Fox said the new cabinet was formed as an economy-oriented cabinet, charged with the task of carrying out the planned targets set by the new administration for the country's social and economic development. Upon the appointments, the new cabinet members pledged their efforts to achieve steady economic growth by supporting small and medium-sized firms, enhancing the competitiveness of the enterprises, encouraging private sector and foreign investment, increasing export, expanding infrastructural projects, creating new jobs and reducing foreign debts. Fox, a former president of Coca-Cola in Mexico as well as a congressman and governor of his home state, Guanajuato, had said after he won the presidential election in July that he would organize a new cabinet consisting of long-sighted, responsible, ethical and honorable experienced professionals. |
